GWM M4 Review

Fuel efficiency meets travel comfort

By: Zorena Jantze

If you want a good-looking drive that ticks the affordability, style and safety boxes, and opens up a more adventurous lifestyle, look no further. Adorned with a sporty look, a refined new front grille with squared-off front-end features and Daytime Running Lamps (DRL), the GWM M4 SUV crossover’s cheeky looks is bound to turn heads.

For most, GWM is reminiscent of comfort with a lot of style, and the new GWM M4 series offers just that, but with more adventure up its sleeve. Great Wall Motors (GWM), coined after the Great Wall of China will take you places with GWM M4, as it is geared for both on and off road driving with a robust ground clearance of 185mm, and a special luggage carrier for that weekend trip out of town.

Under the M4’s bonnet, the two-wheel drive car sports a 1.5-litre VVT petrol engine, with a five-speed manual transmission that’s been designed for fuel efficiency in mind. This means that maximum power of 71,3 kW is developed at 6 000 rpm providing 138 Nm of torque to the front wheels.

Inside the cabin, the GWM oozes of comfort and class. A trip computer puts all the vehicles vital statistics at your fingertips whilst the steering wheel with audio control, cruise control and Bluetooth ensure that you’re always in control. Cup holders and a cargo curtain help keep things organised, as do the separated foldable rear seats with a 60:40 split that provides extra luggage space.

There are also electric windows with push-down function at the driver's seat, automatic air-con and a CD player.

The M4 has been designed to meet global safety standards and boasts a comprehensive safety package. Dual front airbags and disc brakes all-round backed by ABS with EBD are fitted. Isofix child-seat mountings are mounted at the rear and the front seatbelts are height-adjustable. The rear doors also feature child locks.

For days filled with rain and hazy weather, the M4 has fog lights front and rear to boost visibility and rear radar. Security is provided by a standard immobiliser, with the further convenience of remote central locking and a car locating function. The GWM M4 comes with a 5 year/100 000km warranty as well as a two year AA roadside assistance with an optional service plan.
