BUILDING A PROJECT CAR

Garwin Beukes - The battle of patience.

Motoring enthusiasts who are passionate about improving their vehicles, all strive to having a complete car, built according to their standards. Getting there however, can be very troublesome.

If you’ve completely set your mind on starting this long and most likely painful journey, here’s a few things you need to know before you start:

  1. Even though it isn’t always possible the first and most important tip would be to have an additional car which isn’t your daily car especially when you drive frequently.
  2. When you’re in the market of buying, look out for rust on the car's body. Rust is the single most annoying thing to deal with. Don’t buy a car that’s been sitting in someone's backyard at the coast for years. Definitely not worth the trouble with the accumulated rust.
  3. Do research on the availability of parts for the car you intend to buy. Having to rely on importing all your parts can be very costly .
  4. Get quality tools. If you intend on doing a lot of the modifications or fitment yourself you won’t want tools that you need to replace every other month.
  5. Don’t rush it. Building a project car will take a lot longer than you think. Exhibiting a half-baked car is the last thing you want to be known for.

Next week we run through some in depth tips on starting out.
