Garwin Beukes - Panicking is human instinct and usually results in a situation going from bad to worse.
As a driver the probability of you being involved in an accident or having a breakdown is inevitable. Especially in Namibia, you are bound to have a glitch while attempting to reach your destination.
It is because of this reason that it’s of utmost importance to ensure that you equip yourself with the correct know how’s.
In the event of a breakdown, use your hazard lights. Now you’re visible and drivers know they need to slow down.
Pull over to the side of the road or if possible completely off the road (make sure there is at least 1m between your car and the road). Make sure you are on the correct side of the road and do not leave your car until it is safe to do so.
Place your emergency triangle marker a few meters behind your vehicle. Now return to your vehicle and get help.
Remember your safety is the most important factor. It’s a good idea to keep vehicle tow-in numbers in your vehicle at all times, as they can drive to pick you up, wherever you are. And very important - make sure your doors are always locked, especially during night times.
