Comfort in traffic (Part 1)

Barry de Klerk - Every morning we wake up, get ready and get in our cars to get to our jobs. Some days it is much more of a hassle than others.

Statistically a person who drives to work plus drops their children at school, can spend up to two hours in their vehicles per day. Those who commute between towns spend even more time on the road.

Cars have been making commuting a little more convenient, but a coin has two sides. A lot of stress or other health issues can arise when you spend too much time in your vehicles. Precautions can be taken, but sometimes alternate means of transport should be considered. This week we are going to look at how uneasy commuting can be.

Vehicles cause a lot of sound pollution - loud sounds of cars, music and the occasional honking at taxis can permanently damage your ears. We tend to forget how sensitive our ears are and unfortunately loud sounds can lead to permanent damage. Damage can be done to drivers and their passengers.

It is summer again and the late afternoons can be quite hot. Not all of us have air-conditioners in our vehicles, so we drive around with our windows down. Unfortunately for us there is something called air pollution. Fumes that are released by cars and factories can be dangerous.

The contaminated air contains dust, pollen, CO2, Carbon Monoxide, smoke and water particles. This might lead to allergic reactions are permanent damage. The fumes are also bad for the environment, because of its long term affects the ozone. This in turn leads to global warming and climate change.

One of the most painful causes of traffic is its affect on mental health. This might not be something you feel at the moment, but in the long term it can cause a lot of strain. Spending hours stuck in traffic takes its toll on the mind, especially when you come across bad drivers.

Driving also puts a lot of strain on the body. You might experience neck pains, back pains, headaches or any other discomfort. This might be because your seat is not set right or because you spend too much time in an uncomfortable position.

Next week we are going to take a look at how we can overcome the obstacles we face while commuting.
