The Dangers of the Western Bypass

Garwin Beukes - Approach carefully.

The portion of the Western Bypass road leading from the Monte Christo bridge to the Weighbridge as you head to Okahandja is becoming more dangerous for drivers by the day.

Pedestrians going to work at China Town and the Northern Industrial trading areas cross the highway during morning hours and knock off times despite the allocated bridge. One such road crosser who preferred to remain anonymous said walking to the bridge takes up 15 to 20 more minutes of his time and said he does not want to be late for work.

In the year 2017, a total of 70 pedestrians were hit by cars and died on this exact portion of the road. Despite Windhoek City Police interventions which involved going to the said areas very early and directing pedestrians to the bridge, pedestrians continue the habit.

Road users are cautioned to keep within the 80km/h speed limit and drive carefully as this portion is a high risk area.
