All-new Jeep Grand Cherokee breaks cover with technological updates

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has been revealed for 2022 with an all-new architecture, plug-in hybrid powertrain and significant changes to the exterior and interior design. The new SUV will be offered with a number of different trims and engine options.

The fifth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee introduces the 4xe powertrain which uses a turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine together with two electric motors supported by a 17 kWh battery pack to produce 290 kW and 637 N.m of torque to all four wheels via an eight-speed torque converter.

This model can be had in Trailhawk trim which adds a Quadra-Drive II 4×4 system with a two-speed transfer case and a 2,72:1 low-range gear ratio, rear electronic limited-slip differential, Selec-Terrain traction management system and speed control, a 278 mm ground clearance, 610 mm water fording capability. 47,4:1 crawl ratio, blue tow hooks and blue-accented 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tyres.

Those looking for a more traditional powertrain can still opt for the naturally aspirated 3,6-litre V6 Pentastar will which boasts a power output of 216 kW and 353 N.m of torque. The larger 5,7-litre V8 is also available with 266 kW and 529 N.m. Both engines use the same eight-speed torque converter as well.

New to the 4×4 system on the Jeep Grand Cherokee is a front-axle disconnect. If the vehicle senses that road conditions do not require all-wheel drive, the front-axle disconnect automatically places the system in a two-wheel drive, reducing drag on the driveline and improving fuel economy. Four-wheel drive automatically re-engages when the vehicle senses it is needed.

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee is built on an all-new architecture that was mission specific for the fifth-generation model. It’s a purpose-built and flexible architecture is engineered for both three- and two-rows, as well as electrified 4xe capability.
