KNOWING THE LAW

Garwin Beukes - Without a single worry in the world, the driver of a bakkie cruised passed the Windhoek City Police headquarters transporting 16 people in the back of his cab.

Since 2015, the law states that any vehicle weighing under 3500 kg is allowed to carry only six people at a time. For every other person in access you will pay a N$500 fine.

In this specific case the driver was charged with N$5000. City Police Spokesperson, Edmund Khoaseb, said this offense is common in Namibia specially with transporting children.

It is a common site, seeing more than ten children being loaded at the back of a bakkie after school. Local police has started their annual campaigns and will be on the look out for similar offenses.
